Asking questions is so practical. It is despite this that language instruction often begins with numbers, colors, and the word for 'door.' Here's my attempt at codifying my alternative.

How visceral experiences of isolation brought me closer to my values. How these experiences—these feelings—tethered themselves to my intellectualized understandings. Where feelings are the essence of what compose our subconscious thinking, tethering feelings to knowledge is an essential part of self-construction. France awarded me many occasions to beat my head against the frustration of not feeling understood. Even as I continued integrating into French life, I *needed* the generous and creative listening of others to be understand.
